Republicans have long claimed that President Carter was an abject failure because he ordered American forces to attempt a hostage rescue in Iran but the rescue attempt collapsed because of botched execution at the desert staging area. President Carter, Republicans seem to claim, was completely responsible for the failure of the mission -- not the equipment failures, not the on-the-ground mistakes, not the inadequate training of the troops.
Yet Republicans now assert that President Obama can claim no responsibility whatsoever for the success of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. President Obama, Republicans claim, merely did what any president would have done by ordering American forces to attempt to kill or capture bin Laden and beyond that he was just a bystander.
The "any president would do it" claim is, of course, refuted by the public statement of then-president George W. Bush that he didn't know where bin Laden might be hiding and didn't really care because he didn't consider bin Laden such a big deal.
The only thing consistent about the Republican position is their dishonesty.
