What is it about former president Bill Clinton and his wife, New York Senator Hillary Clinton, that turns many conservatives into sputtering idiots?

There is nothing -- nothing -- that they will not distort or simply make up to slander the Clintons. From the suicide of Vince Foster to the recent Freeh-k attack on 60 Minutes it seems that no lie is too ridiculous and unfounded to be repeated ad nauseum.

I suppose you could follow the money. Richard Mellon Scaife, a billionaire with a grudge against all things Clinton, has made it quite lucrative to contract Clintonphobia. One of the "investments" in his anti-Clinton portfolio is a web-based "news" service with links to an anti-Hillary campaign that proudly models itself on the Swift Boat media blitz against John Kerry.

Yet most of the members of this mob aren't cashing Scaife's checks. Nevertheless, they breathlessly repeat the latest hopeful sign that Hillary is a lesbian or that 9/11 was Bill's fault.

It seems that politics in the media age has become another mindless televised sport -- complete with irrationally loyal fans who hate the other side. Especially when the other side beats your team.

I know, I know; Both sides play the game. Bush-haters can make outrageous assertions and even become detached from reality, too. I'll get around to criticizing them later. Why don't you just hold your breath until then, OK?
