Alito Incognito?

With the collapse of Harriet Miers' nomination, W has now nominated Judge Samuel Alito to replace retiring Justice O'Connor. The instantaneous cheers from the Amen Corner were not encouraging.

However, there is an interesting review of some of Judge Alito's opinions over at the Blue Mass Group blog. At the very least, it is difficult to pin him down as a right-wing zealot.

My quick read is that Alito is not a Scalia clone. He seems less strident, more thoughtful. For example, AMERICABlog points to Alito's defense of the right to privacy while a student at Princeton. Admittedly, most folks grow more conservative as they age. Yet it's hard to imagine Scalia ever defending an implied right to privacy in the constitution.
