On the long road to equality there will be many bumps, wrong turns, a wreck or two -- and every so often a pleasant rest stop. Connecticut officially opened its rest stop when it began recognizing gay civil unions on Saturday.
Of course, some folks can't tolerate even a hint of tolerance. Big surprise there. Along with the usual religious-right protests were the equally revealing "White Wolves," a white supremacist group, that marched around the capitol chanting anti-gay slogans.
And some employers may fail to provide the same benefits to civil union couples as currently received by married couples.
Nevertheless, even though it is only a rest stop, as that noted Connecticut resident Martha Stewart might say, it's a good thing.
