House Majority Leader Tom DeLay was indicted today.
Characteristically, he lashed out at his accusers, calling the indictment a partisan plot. Yet he's known this was coming for some time. Last year, he orchistrated a change in the House rules so that he could maintain his leadership position even after an indictment. The GOP Caucus quickly realized that kind of loyalty would drag them all down together. So they took it back -- a political mulligan.
Someone once said that the Republicans came to Washington to drain the political swamp. After a few years in power, they realized it wasn't a swamp -- it was a hot tub. And now they're drowning in it.
